If the lower steering column bearing and race in your mk1 need to be replaced, you won’t be able to find them at the dealer as they have been obsolete for years.

All is not lost, however. Designed and built by Tech-53 in Canada, using the finest materials and components from around the world, this 3-piece Steering Column Bearing Repair Kit has what you need to sort that steering column bearing problem out, once and for all.

The outside surface of the Tech-53 Bearing is made of Acetal Homopolymer which has been knurled for superior surface contact, while the inside uses 22 individual rollers. Compare this with the OEM bearing whose surface was made of injection plastic that used ribbing to hold the bearing in place, and only had 12 individual rollers. These improvements make for a more robust bearing that holds itself in place better, while providing greater load distribution.

The Tech-53 Bearing Race is CNC machined from Chrome Moly steel to precise tolerances, while the inner portion is molded from high durometer polyurethane – a major improvement over the injection molded plastic used on the OEM version.

To ensure that everything stays in place, is the task of the Tech-53 Steering Column Repair. This item is made up of a black oxide, 2-piece bearing support, and is held together with a pair of M6x15mm hex head bolts.

PLEASE NOTE : The width of the bearing (16mm) is a bit wider than stock (13mm). However, there is sufficient room for this size difference within the steering tube. Keeping the width of the bearing at a minimum will limit the axial strain applied to the inner race.
