VW sells a rebuilt "short rack" on its own, which means that you'll also have to purchase inner and outer tie rods, tie rod boots, boot clamps, and tie rod end nuts. You’ll also have to pay a $220 core charge. You’ll get the core charge back once the old steering rack core has been returned, but that’s just more hassle, mess, and time wasted.

Please note that if a steering rack is replaced without also replacing a failed or failing power steering pump, and without completely flushing out the old fluid from the lines and reservoir, failure of the new rack will occur. Should this happen, the failure will not be considered a manufacturers defect, and the warranty will be voided.
