These OEM oil check valves are designed to be open when your engine is running, allowing oil to circulate through the heads, and then to close when you shut off your engine. This keeps oil in the head, ensuring that all moving components stay lubricated during the next start up.

A failed valve will stick open, causing oil to drain down from the head. If you can hear a rattling noise from your engine on start up, one or both of them may have failed, and require immediate replacement to ensure that no damage is done due to lack of lubrication. Even if only one of them has failed, they should always be replaced in pairs.
