The older the trunk strut (AKA hatch strut) on your car, the greater the likelihood that it could fail when you least expect it - like when you're reaching into the trunk for something. On vehicles with power trunk lids, if they don't open without being assisted, or if the lid closes quickly and slums shut, this is also an indication that one or both of the struts should be replaced.
