The cam chain tensioner maintains the correct tension on the camshaft chain. A failing tensioner will not apply sufficient tension to the cam chain, which could cause timing issues, and if left long enough, engine failure. Replace that worn out tensioner with this new OEM unit before it’s too late. If you haven’t got them already, add a valve cover gasket kit to your cart from the link below.

Before installing your new tensioner, be sure to inspect your engine for oil sludge build up. 1.8T engines (especially longitudinally-mounted versions) suffer from oil sludging, which limits oil pressure within the motor, leading to premature failure of the tensioner. If you install a new tensioner in a system where sludge has not been cleared out of, the new tensioner will fail. This is not a failure due to manufacturing defects, and will not be covered under warranty.
