Heat shields reflect heat from your exhaust system away from the underside of the vehicle. As time rolls on, they will disintegrate, come loose and vibrate, and get torn off. If the shields are damaged or missing, the exhaust heat that would have slowly turned them into dust will now be able to work directly on the body. This particular heat shield is found over top of the passenger rear muffler on vehicles with dual muffler exhaust systems. If you’re upgrading your own vehicle to a dual muffler set up, you’ll need one of these, as well as the 8K0253144M exhaust hanger shown below.
